Teledyne Relays Motor Control Products For Design News

Teledyne Relays offers a variety of solid-state devices designed for motor control and other interface applications in the industrial market.

Teledyne Relays, a unit of Teledyne Electronics and Communications, has been the world leader in manufacturing ultraminiature electromechanical and solid-state switching products for more than 40 years. The company's comprehensive product line - including 31 new products released in 2002 - meets a wide range of requirements for industrial, commercial, military and aerospace uses.

EMC INDUCTION MOTOR SOFTSTARTERS
Teledyne Relays offers four three-phase induction motor softstarters that can be used as alternatives to costly and relatively large variable speed controllers. The solid-state Series EMC softstarters are designed for applications such as conveyors, elevators, escalators, pumps, compressors, lamps, fans, cranes and three-phase motor applications.

The EMC softstarters prevent motors from experiencing the stress of high inrush currents - typically six to nine times nominal values - that can cause costly electrical and mechanical damage to the motors and machinery. Problems arising from high inrush currents include overheating, voltage dips, wasted power, excessive noise and contactor wear, and premature electrical or mechanical failure.

The EMC softstarters feature a six-thyristor structure that works like a full-wave phase angle controller (both positive and negative cycles are controlled). They reduce the induction motor starting current as well as the motor starting torque. Motors reach operating speeds gradually - improving the efficiency of the power used, avoiding voltage fluctuations that lead to power variations or "flicker," and minimizing mechanical stress.

The four Teledyne devices offer numerous user settings. Initial torque can be set from 0 to 100 percent. A bypass option is available, as is a PNP or NPN control option. Users also can select a kick option of 0 to 100 milliseconds when choosing not to perform a soft start. The EMC softstarters include a soft-stop capability that allows motors to switch off slowly, reducing the possibility of damage to both motors and equipment. The duration can be set manually up to 64 seconds. The units also feature electrical and visual diagnostic and self-test functions to assist with machine maintenance as well as to help lower costs and to reduce delays of restarting equipment. The EMC softstarters fit existing applications without any modification of the wiring field configuration. They can replace electromechanical star-delta starters without changing the motor coupling. The devices may be implemented like standard three-phase electromechanical contactors for induction motors. Because they can be installed inside the delta wiring, they can drive 1.73 times more current than a standard online softstarter. Each unit can be mounted on a DIN rail or attached with screws. The EMC softstarters include a base model, two with heat sinks and one with a heat sink and fan:

  • EMC48S50-01 - This model operates at 200 to 480 Vac, 2.2 kW (star) and 3.8 kW (delta). It measures 3.268 x 4.331 x 2.913 inches (83 x 110 x 74 mm) and weighs 21.16 ounces (600g).
  • EMC48S50-02 - This model operates at 200 to 480 Vac, 7.5 kW (star) and 13 kW (delta). With heat sink, it measures 3.268 x 4.331 x 6.102 inches (83 x 110 x 155 mm) and weighs 52.9 ounces (1500g).
  • EMC48S50-03 - This model operates at 200 to 480 Vac, 11 kW (star) and 19 kW (delta). With heat sink, it measures 4.331 x 4.331 x 6.102 inches (110 x 110 x 155 mm) and weighs 70.55 ounces (2000g).
  • EMC48S50-04 - This model operates at 200 to 480 Vac, 15 kW (star) and 26 kW (delta). With heat sink and fan, it measures 4.331 x 5.551 x 6.102 inches (110 x 141 x 155 mm) and weighs 91.71 ounces (2600g).

DR FAMILY OF DIN-RAIL RELAYS
Teledyne Relays offers four families of industrial solid-state relays that are designed for DIN rail or panel mounting, feature integrated heat sink and diagnostics, and include input and output transient suppression. The new space-saving relays - designated the Series DR, DRD, DRL and DRS - are suited for heating control, motor control and industrial process control.

DIN rail mounting is gaining momentum globally due to the reduced time and labor required to mount several relays on to a system. The new relays feature green LEDs that serve as status indicators for diagnostics. The Series DR, DRD and DRL relays come in zero-cross and random turn-ON models with thyristor output. They feature very high immunity, low leakage current, and internal input and output transient suppression. The Series DRS provides full diagnostics. It provides both a visual and electrical input and output status.

The Series DR relays deliver single output up to 30A 510Vac. Each model measures 0.889 x 3.9 x 4.689 inches (22.5 x 98 x 119.1 mm) and weighs 9.1 oz. (260g). The Series DRD relays deliver dual output up to 25A 510 Vac. The dual package allows users to conserve cabinet space. Each model measures 1.768 x 3.9 x 4.689 inches (44.9 x 98 x 119.1 mm) and weighs 15.87 oz. (450g). The Series DRL relays deliver single output up to 35A 510Vac. Each model measures 1.768 x 3.9 x 4.689 inches (44.9 x 98 x 119.1 mm) and weighs 13.4 oz. (380g). The Series DRS relays deliver single output up to 30A 510Vac. Each model measures 0.889 x 3.9 x 4.689 inches (22.5 x 98 x 119.1 mm) and weighs 9.1 oz. (260g).

SERIES L SOLID-STATE RELAYS
Teledyne Relays offers the Series L solid-state power relays primarily for on/off control of medium-power equipment, interfacing microprocessor controls to AC loads, heating control, medical equipment and test equipment. The Series L relays deliver output to 25A 280Vac. They offer a low and high DC voltage control range and zero-cross turn-on in an ultraminiature package designed for PC board mounting. An optional thermal pad maybe installed to eliminate the need for thermal grease when mounting on to a heat sink.

The L relays provide optical isolation to protect control elements from load transients. They also offer excellent thermal performance. The Series L relay measures 1.37 x 0.78 x 0.50 inches (36.05 x 28.32 x 12.70 mm). It weighs 0.406 oz. (11.5g).

SERIES AS SOILD-STATE RELAYS
Teledyne Relays offers the Series AS solid-state relays primarily for interface applications. They can be used in the control of motors, transformers, food-industry equipment, lamps and medical equipment. All are UL approved. The Series AS relays offer output current ratings 6A to a voltage of 600Vac. These single inline package relays are designed for mounting on printed circuit boards.

AS relays offer zero-cross or random switching and are designed to withstand very high current overloads. The relays measure 1.7 x 1.0 x 0.39 inches and weigh 1.06 oz. AS relays are suited for interface applications, vending machines, light and lamp control, contactor drivers, fan speed control, heating controls and HVAC controls. As an option, the relays offer DIN rail mounting. A control LED provides visual control status. The AS DIN-rail relays provide an internal MOV to limit the voltage spikes on the output. The tight zero-cross window significantly reduces EMI. They come in a compact and user-friendly package that weighs 1.06 ounces. The 240 Vac relay measures 0.48 x 3.01 x 2.09 inches; the 440 Vac relay measures 0.68 x 3.01 x 2.09 inches.

SERIES BS SOLID-STATE RELAYS
Teledyne Relays offers three Series BS solid-state relays primarily for interface applications. The Series BS 4-Amp, four-pin SIP relays are designed for mounting on a printed circuit board. The relays can withstand very high current overloads. Their compact size and triac output make them suited for switching medium-power resistive loads. BS relays can be used in such interface applications as vending machines, light/lamp control and HVAC controls. They measure 1.7 x 0.98 x 0.39 inches and weigh 0.7 ounce.

SERIES DS SOLID-STATE RELAYS
Teledyne Relays offers two Series DS solid-state relays for industrial applications. The Series DS 3 Amp, four-pin SIP relays are designed for mounting on printed circuit boards and medium-power DC loads. They offer built-in voltage protection. DS relays are an alternative to electromechanical and reed relays. The relays can be used in programmable logic controllers, instrumentation, test equipment and solenoid drivers. They measure 1.7 x 0.98 x 0.39 inches and weigh 0.7 ounce.
